B. B. Chaudhuri

Professor Bidyut Baran Chaudhuri is the Head of Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Unit of Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta and a distinguished J. C. Bose Fellow(2010-). Professor Chaudhuri received his B.Sc (Hons), B. Tech and M. Tech degrees from Calcutta University, India in 1969, 1972 and 1974, respectively and Ph.D. Degree from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in 1980. He did his Post-Doc work during 1981-82 from Queen's University, U.K. He also worked as a visiting faculty at Tech University, Hannover during 1986-87 as well as at GSF institute of Radiation Protection (now Leibnitz institute), Munich in 1990 and 1992.

In 1978 Professor Chaudhuri joined Indian Statistical Institute as a faculty member and served as the Project Co-ordinator and Head of National Nodal Centre for Knowledge Based Computing till 1994. He is the founding head of Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Unit of the Institute, which was established in 1994. His teaching experience includes taking various masters degree courses, guiding several Master degree and 13 Ph.D. dissertations in the areas of Image Processing, Pattern Recognition, Density estimation, Clustering, Data Compression, Fuzzy set applications, Texture analysis, Remote Sensing, Fractal Geometry, Optical Character Recognition, Speech analysis, ECG analysis, Natural Language Processing, Information Extraction.

His principal research contributions are Optical Character Recognition (OCR) of Indian scripts (Devnagari, Bangla, Assamese and Oriya), design of Indian language workstation for the blind: Bharati Braille System, natural language processing in Indian languages including electronic dictionaries, word-processing editor, morphological processor and spell-checker design, Pattern recognition and image processing, Image data compression, Optical communication and diclectric waveguides. Prof. Chaudhuri has published about 350 research papers in various international journals and conference proceedings in the area of his research interest. He is the author of five books named Two tone Image Processing and Recognition (Wiley Eastern/New Age International New-Delhi, 1993), Object Oriented Programming: Fundamentals and applications (Prentice Hall, New Delhi, 1997), Computer and Information technology Dictionary (Ananda Publishers, 2002), Digital Document Processing (Springer Verlag, 2007) and Sound Symbolic Words in Bangla (Bangla Academy, 2010).

Vitoantonio Bevilacqua

Short bio

Vitoantonio Bevilacqua obtained the Bachelor Degree in Electronic Engineering and the Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Polytechnic where he is currently Tenured Assistant Professor of Human Computer Interaction at the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering and taught also Expert Systems, Medical Informatics and Image Processing. Since 1996 he has been working and investigating in the field of computer vision and image processing, neural networks, evolutionary algorithms, and hybrid expert systems. The main applications of his research are in real world, in biometry, in medicine, in bioinformatics, systems biology and ambient assisted living. In 2000 he was involved as Visiting Researcher in an EC funded TMR (Trans-Mobility of Researchers) network (ERB FMRX-CT97-0127) called CAMERA (CAd Modeling Environment from Range Images) and worked in Manchester (UK) in the field of geometric feature extraction and 3D objects reconstruction.

He has published more than 100 papers in refereed journals, books, international conferences proceedings and chaired several sessions such as Speech Recognition, Biomedical Informatics, Intelligent Image Processing and Bioinformatics in international conferences. He won the Best Paper Award at International Conference on Intelligent Computing held in Shanghai (ICIC 2008), he was Program Chair of ICIC 2009, Publication Chair of ICIC 2010, Tutorial Chair of ICIC 2011, Publication Chair of ICIC 2012 and ICIC 2013, Award Committee Chair of ICIC 2014, Special Issue Chair of ICIC 2015. On July 2011, he was invited as lecturer at International School on Medical Imaging using Bio-inspired and Soft Computing-Miere (Spain) MIBISOC FP7-PEOPLE-ITN-2008. GA N. 238819—where presented his research on Intelligent Tumors Computer Aided Early Diagnosis and Therapy: Neural network and Genetic Algorithms frameworks. He won the Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Intelligent Computing held in Shanghai (ICIC 2008), he was a program chair of ICIC 2009, Publication Chair of ICIC 2010, Tutorial Chair of ICIC 2011, Publication Chair of ICIC 2012 and ICIC 2013, Award Committee Chair of ICIC 2014, Special Issue Chair of ICIC 2015, and was General Chair of HMISS 2015 and Program Co-Chair of ICIC 2016.

Atul Negi

Dr. Atul Negi, who is a Professor, at School of Computer and Information Sciences, AI Lab, University of Hyderabad was previously Director at Prestige Institute of Engineering and Science at Indore India. He also has been a guest faculty at the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad. He was first employed as a Scientific Officer at the Department of Computer Science and Automation at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Dr. Negi took his Doctorate from the University of Hyderabad and his M.Sc(Engg.) from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He is a graduate with distinction in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the Osmania University, Hyderabad.

He has diverse research interests in Computational Intelligence and Applications, Optical Character Recognition of Telugu Script, PCA and its applications. Dr. Negi was the Chairman of IEEE Hyderabad Section (2012-13) and is a Senior Member of IEEE , a Co-Founder Member and Moderator of Linux User group of Hyderabad, Life Member of Indian Unit of International Association for Pattern Recognition. He has been associated as an investigator with funded projects from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and with Indian Space Research Organization.

He has organized a number of workshops on Pattern Recognition and its applications to OCR. He has been an invited speaker at various corporates, and at various Conferences and Workshops. He has participated as a member of the Project Review and Evaluation of several projects in industry and academia. He has served as Proceedings Editor and Track Chair (Computing Track) for IEEE Indicon 2011, chaired sessions at various National and International conferences in India and abroad. He is a reviewer for a number of journals from reputed international publishers. He also has served on the Technical Program Committees for various National and International Conferences, like ICDAR, IEEE SMC, IJCAI, IJCNN, etc.

Rajkumar Buyya

Dr. Rajkumar Buyya is a Fellow of IEEE, Professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Future Fellow of the Australian Research Council, and Director of the Cloud Computing and Distributed Systems (CLOUDS) Laboratory at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He is also serving as the founding CEO of Manjrasoft, a spin-off company of the University, commercializing its innovations in Cloud Computing. He has authored over 500 publications and four text books including "Mastering Cloud Computing" published by McGraw Hill, China Machine Press, and Morgan Kaufmann for Indian, Chinese and international markets respectively. He also edited several books including "Cloud Computing: Principles and Paradigms" (Wiley Press, USA, Feb 2011). He is one of the highly cited authors in computer science and software engineering worldwide (h-index=98, g-index=205, 46000+ citations). Microsoft Academic Search Index ranked Dr. Buyya as the world's top author in distributed and parallel computing between 2007 and 2015. "A Scientometric Analysis of Cloud Computing Literature" by German scientists ranked Dr. Buyya as the World's Top-Cited (#1) Author and the World's Most-Productive (#1) Author in Cloud Computing.

Software technologies for Grid and Cloud computing developed under Dr. Buyya's leadership have gained rapid acceptance and are in use at several academic institutions and commercial enterprises in 40 countries around the world. Dr. Buyya has led the establishment and development of key community activities, including serving as foundation Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Scalable Computing and five IEEE/ACM conferences. These contributions and international research leadership of Dr. Buyya are recognized through the award of "2009 IEEE TCSC Medal for Excellence in Scalable Computing" from the IEEE Computer Society TCSC. Manjrasoft's Aneka Cloud technology developed under his leadership has received "2010 Frost & Sullivan New Product Innovation Award" and recently Manjrasoft has been recognised as one of the Top 20 Cloud Computing companies by the Silicon Review Magazine. He served as the foundation Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing. He is currently serving as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Software: Practice and Experience, which was established 40+ years ago.

K.C. Santosh

Dr KC is an Assistant Professor for the department of computer science at the University of South Dakota (USD). Before joining the University of South Dakota, from 2013 to 2015, Dr. KC worked as a research fellow at the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), National Institutes of Health (NIH). He worked as a postdoctoral research scientist at the LORIA research centre, Universite de Lorraine in direct collaboration with industrial partner ITESOFT, France, for 2 years. He also worked as a research scientist at the INRIA Nancy Grand Est research centre for 3 years, until 2011. Dr. KC has demonstrated expertise in pattern recognition, image processing, computer vision and machine learning with various applications in handwriting recognition, graphics recognition, document information content exploitation, medical image analysis and biometrics. Dr. KC published more than 70 research articles, including a book section in encyclopedia of electrical and electronics engineering.

At the NLM-NIH, among many research topics, Dr. K.C. received an award on “automatic X-ray screening for rural areas” from Health and Human Services (HHS) Ignite. Besides, the project was reported in Washington Post, 2013), covered in the SPIE newsroom of biomedical & medical imaging, has been in focus of NLM-NIH and very recently, published a research highlight (a layman's summary) in Atlas of Science.

Dr. KC is an assoc .editor of Int. J. of Machine Learning & Cybernetics, Springer, serves on the editorial board member of SpringerPlus, Int. J. Computer Vision and Image Proc. (IJCVIP), Computer Image Analysis, Frontiers in ICT, J. of Pattern Recognition Research (JPRR), Frontiers in Digital Humanities: Cultural Heritage Digitization, Frontiers in ICT: Computer Image Analysis, and served as a review panel for Natural Science and Engineering Research Councils (NSERC) of Canada. He is a regular reviewer for high quality journals (IEEE, Spirnger, Elsevier) and high quality conferences and workshops (sponsored by IEEE, IAPR and Springer) in the domain.
